Mahalakotuwa eVillage is situated in a beautiful landscape surrounded by Knuckles Mountain Range in Laggala electorate in Matale district. The village consists of several smaller villages that are spread in 20 square kilometer area. The villagers’ main livelihood is agriculture. Though farmers’ main crop is rice, they grow vegetables during Maha season. 90% of the 800 families live in this village depend on agriculture. The only haven for education is Sri Sumana Maha Vidyalaya of Mahalakotuwa. More than 250 students of the area study at this school while 16 teachers serve as teachers. The school which is away from Mahalakotuwa eVillage, Matale, Central Province the city got its computer lab in 2004. The modern computer lab that consists of 15 computers has the internet facility too. This is one of the first computer labs given by Secondary Education Modernization Project (SEMP) of Ministry of Education. Ever since the arrival of this priceless recourse, the management of the lab has ensured the productive use of the facility. Students started getting education during both school time and after school. Therefore, the computer lab could gain the first place among the most productive computer labs in the province in 2005 and 2006. Today, around 90% of the students can operate the computers very well. 60% can communicate through Internet. Lab’s daily internet penetration exceeds 250 persons. With all these we are heading for eVillage concept tomorrow.
