Nawa Medagama is a newly established village under Mahaweli Development Project. As it is newly built and surround by some other villages it was “Nawa- New” “Meda- Central” “Gama- Village” (Nawa Medagama). Though this village was created in the recent past, the other surrounded villages have a historic background. For example, a bordering village Henanigala inhabited by indigenous people was found in as far back as 1965. Even ancient ruins of King Dutugamunu era can be found in the vicinity. These villagers have multi religious, multi cultural backgrounds as they were resettled from various parts of the country. Their main source of living is rice cultivation and some engage in freshwater fishing industry in inland water resources. The village is surrounded by villages such as Kelegama, Wewgama, Diawiddagama, Pahalagama, Medagama, Kudagama, Wewmedagama, Henanigala South and Henanigala North. In Nawa Medagama village there are over 200 families. The Maduruoya National Park is on in eastern boundary of the village. As the village was establish under a rural development project, the village has fairly new banks, post office, schools and computer labs. They contributed to speedy development of the village. |
