Sammanthurai eVillage is situated in a beautiful landscape surrounded by the paddy fields in Ampara district. The village consists of 26 smaller villages that are spread in 135 square kilometer area. There are 44 mosques in the DS division. The village has a Technical College and a campus named the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka. The villagers’ main livelihood is agriculture. Though farmers’ main crop is rice, they grow vegetables during Maha season and produce bricks during off season. 85% of the 15,768 families live in this village depend on agriculture. The modern computer lab that consists of 20 computers has the internet facility too. The computer lab extends its services for outsiders as well. From these activities the lab gained 3 million rupees as income within 4 years. The money is used for developing the computer lab. The school has got a multimedia projector and 6 computers from external activities. This is one of the first computer labs given by Secondary Education Modernization Project (SEMP) of Ministry of Education. Ever since the arrival of this priceless recourse, the management of the lab has ensured the productive use of the facility. Students started getting education during both school time and after school. Therefore, the computer lab could gain the first place among the most productive computer labs in the province after 2005. Today, around 90% of the students can operate the computers very well. 60% can communicate through Internet. Lab’s daily internet penetration exceeds 250 persons. |
