|
Damahana village is situated in Balangoda electorate, Rathnapura district, Sabaragamuwa province. History says that this area is famous for a primitive human being called Balangoda Manawaya (Balangoda Man) and the area is well known for the Mahawalathenna plateau ( Balangoda plateau .) The irrigation system of Balangoda, mainly consists of two rivers called the Walawe Ganga and Ve-ganga. Dorawela oya and Belihuloya meet the Walawe River at Balangoda. The Ve-ganga originates at Mawela close to Damahana. Balangoda is situated at the height of 670M (2096 ft). This belongs to the Sabaragamuwa Province. Its surrounding is enchanting. One can reach this city travelling 147km east of Colombo and 57 km west of Badulla. This area is surrounded by the Pettigala mountain range in the west, the steep crest of Dethanagala known as the southern steep in the north and Mahawalatenna plateau in the east. Some say that a thousand of monks were ordained as bhikkus and because of that the village got its name as “Damahana.” It is true that this is a sacred place. There are rice fields in the middle of this village. Still we can see the farmers go to their paddy fields having hoes on their shoulders and having a betel case. The most venerable Aggamaha panditha, Abidajada Maharattaguru Balangoda Ananda Maithriya Tthero was born at Bulathgama in Balangoda . Since the day he became a novice monk he was very dedicated and enthusiastic to study the profound philosophy of Buddhism. The first world woman prime minister, Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s native place was also Balangoda. |
