Koulara village comes under the Gramasevake Division of Katupilagama in Wellawaya electorate in Monaragala district. It centres the districts Rathnapura Moneragala & Hambantota. There are ancient historical places such as Sankapala Vihara temple, Uru Sitano Wewa reservoir, Maduwanwala Walauwa (manor) Udawalawe Reservoir and the Udawalawe National Park. The village consists of several smaller villages such as Koulara North, Koulara South, Dalukketiya, Thalapathgama, Samanalagama, Mada Ara and Ekamuthugama. The main income of this village is through agriculture and gem mining. In the past, there was only chena cultivation, and a great amount of gemming. As time went by sugar-cane, rice, banana plantation, chena cultivation, cattle breeding also contributing to the economy of the village. Majority of children who live in these villages come to the Koularagama Maha Vidyalaya. The Koularagama M.V. is situated in the Sewanagala area in the Monaragala District of the Uva Province in a beautiful area in the midst of sugar cane and paddy fields. There are about 850 students and 54 teachers in the school. Under the aids given by the Asian Development Bank, Secondary Education Modernization Project SEMP of the Ministry of Education constructed a complete Computer Learning Center with twenty computers, and was handed over to the students on the 28th of June 2006. This became a turning point of ICT education in the village. |
